short story contest

here are the contest guidelines:
work must be fiction, 300 - 5000 words
entry deadline is friday may 15, 2009
submit in the body of an email to brandongorrell[at]gmail.com with 'contest' in the subject heading
paypal your entry fee/ agree to mail cash or check to mailing address provided at the same time as submitting your story. stories without entry fees will not be considered

more information:
i will be the judge of the contest
winner and runner-up will be announced no later than june 1, 2009

entry fee is 7$, payable through paypaling brandongorrell[at]gmail.com. if you are unable to paypal but would like to send cash or check, please email the above email address and i will give you a mailing address

winner will receive 70% of the total pooled money, plus my forthcoming poetry book, if they want it/haven't already ordered it. for example, if 10 people enter, the winner will be paypaled $49 and sent a copy of my book. i will keep the remaining 30%

a runner-up will also be chosen. the runner up will be sent a copy of my forthcoming poetry book, if they want it. if they've already ordered my book, i will compensate them in some other way (sending them another book or something)

i have decided on this system because a) it ensures that i will not have to pay prize money, b) with a relatively low entry fee, it may encourage, in a 'domino-effect', or something, additional people to join after a certain number of people join because (and also reason c)) as the number of participants gets higher, prize money does as well, creating a situation where, if a lot of people join, relatively little can be paid, by the author, with a potentially large payoff (possibly increasing your money x5 or even x10)

another factor you may want to consider when deciding to enter this contest is that if a very low number of people enter, like 2 or 3, you have a high chance of making a couple of dollars + getting my book for free, or getting my book at almost half the cost

while one of my motivations for doing this contest is to gain money, money gained will be relatively little. for example, if 10 people enter, i will make $21, minus a book (retail $12). that is a net profit of $9. that will probably equal $3 an hour or less, considering that i'll be reading submissions, tracking progress of contest, spending time in front of computer for the sole purpose of running the contest, etc. other motivations for this contest include attracting visitors to my blog, thus potentially increasing book sales, 'networking' and/or 'building relationships', and giving writers an opportunity to make money off their 'work' (rather than working for someone/something else)

to ensure certain levels of transparency, i will soon create a new link at the top of this blog called 'contest' or something. here i will post the rules of and some info about this contest, and the number of people that have joined. this way, a person can decide if he/she wants to join the contest based on the number of people that have joined, and thus the amount of money that could potentially be gained

i encourage everyone that reads this blog post to enter this contest. soon, you will be able to use the number of participants, the specific story you might send, the tone of this entire blog + linked pages, and literary references you have seen me use in the past, to roughly estimate your odds of victory

the winning and runner-up entries will both be posted on my blog after the contest is over

additional notes:
chelsea martin, when asked about the possibility of doing this contest, said 'i don't like it'

colin bassett said '"honestly" a "good idea"'

see this link for more information on the contest

"i will not enter in this contest for fear of writing in a similar style as brandon gorrell."

this is the thought that i think will go through most people's heads when reading about this contest.

is there a possible way to send entry fee in the mail because card connected with paypal essentially "doesn't work."???

brandon said...

hm, i hope not

stories will be judged on how much i like them. if stories appear similar in tone to stories of mine, or of writers who's 'work' i enjoy, i predict liking those stories

i often enjoy 'work' by contemporary writers such as richard yates, charles bukowski, raymond carver, lydia davis, lorrie moore, jean rhys, frederick barthelme, jean-paul sartre

i often enjoy 'work' by 'internet writers' such as chelsea martin, blake butler, sam pink, tao lin, jimmy chen, zachary german, ellen kennedy, daniel bailey, matthew savoca, jillian clark, victoria trott, matthew simmons, justin dobbs, chris killen, noah cicero, colin bassett, and maybe some others associated with that group of people

david, yes, please email me at brandongorrell@gmail.com and i will give you a mailing address. also email your story when you ship your payment. thank you david

maybe you could post some of the 'best' stories and thus entrants will feel they are 'promoting' and 'fostering' each others works.

i like this idea, i have another idea that is similar to this in a way, but not totally similar, like, maybe, some of the base points or goals are similar, i have talked to colin about it

I was reading the HTMLGIANT post about this contest, and I got about halfway down the comments before I got bored with reading about what other people think about things. I am going to enter but first I have to figure out the $7 thing.

if i don't win this contest i'm not sure how much i'm going to promote your muumuu book brandon

brandon said...

jamie, i will 'front' you the money if necessary. it will come out of the money you win, if you win, or something like that

let me know via my email address listed in this post

brandon said...

i have decided to allow muumuu house people to enter this contest

brandon said...

jamie if i front you money and you don't win then you will just owe me 7 dollars some time in the future

i've been considering entering this contest but i dont write fiction really

what do you suggest i do?

Paul Squires said...

I will enter your contest. I will not pay an entry fee and if I win you don't have to give me a prize. Just tell people I won. If a Muumuu writer or one of your friends wins you will cop even more shit than you are currently. (Not from me, I am just hanging around to see what happens and honestly don't care.)

i feel like i 'have to' 'stick to' the guidelines that are in this post

like i can't change them now because 4 people already entered on the basis of those guidelines

however, i feel, maybe, 'lenient' on what i feel is 'fiction'

like i would call blake butler's EVER 'fiction', i think

or i would accept an excerpt, or something, from EVER, and not feel any type of 'guilt' about it, like i was breaking my own guidelines

i think that is all the information i can offer you thomas

if you send me something that i think is 'poetry' i will refund your money, but i encourage you to find something you have written that seems like 'fiction' and enter the contest with it

i hope you find this answer okay

brandon said...

paul, i can not accept your story as an entry for my contest

the reason is that the people who have entered in my contest entered on the basis of the contest guidelines, which state that "paypal your entry fee/ agree to mail cash or check to mailing address provided at the same time as submitting your story. stories without entry fees will not be considered"

allowing your story to be an entry in my contest creates a situation where 'paying contestants' have less of a chance of winning; no none of them agreed to that when they submitted their story/paypaled me

i have chosen to post this reply as a comment rather than send an email in an effort to deter people from sending me stories without following guidelines

i hope you are not mad by this comment, thank you for your interest anyways

Thomas Patrick Levy said...

sounds fair enough to me brandon

when i "find" some "fiction" i will paypal you 7 dollars and send it to you

brandon said...

fucking so sweet

Paul said...

That is very sane and sensible and I am not mad at all. Hope you enjoyed the story.

pr said...

Hey, Brandon, did you get my story?

brandon said...

hi pr,

i have not gotten your story. i have searched my gmail for it and have not found it. i emailed your husband today and he said he would let you know that i do not have the story. email the story to brandongorrell@gmail.com, and let me know that it is you

i hope everything's okay

pr said...

wierd, i sent it again, both times it says it has "sent".
It's coming from peterrutt@live.com
i put "from pr" in the last one...
I'll try again.

Tao Lin said...

i just got an idea, you can include a 'lifetime subscription' to muumuu house for the prize

brandon said...

pr, sorry, your email was in my spam

i have received your story and everything is okay now

henry said...

okay, i have a different outlook on this contest now.

i will most likely not enter. but i and, i think, anyone who is interested in the contest would like to be able to read all the entries (with the writer's consent of course).

this seems like a good idea. good luck!

Gianni said...

Im afraid I'll send something in and I'll recieve an overwhelming amount of e-mails of shout and anger with angry words in all caps like NO and WRONG and YOU'RE and SEX.

brandon said...

gianni, i wont do that

Gianni said...

ok. I trust you. Now to deal with the anxiety of submitting a story...

but having the option to view the stories that were submitted would be EXTREMELY helpful.

but its up to you, mister.

brandon said...

damn, seems like 'such a good idea' gianni, in terms of getting people to join, but 'unfortunately' i can't do that because no one agreed to it when they entered

Jamie said...

Brandon,
Thanks for offering that. Between the time that I posted and now, I have obtained $7 so I will be sending you my story.

Lindsea said...

I know that the deadline has past, but are you still accepting entries?
